Japan Customs Duty-Free Threshold

Japan applies customs duties when the CIF (Cost + Insurance + Freight) value of a package exceeds ¥16,666 JPY (approximately $110–120 USD). Below this threshold, most items enter duty-free. Note that this is based on the declared CIF value, not just the item price.

⚠️ Never undervalue packages or mark commercial shipments as "Gift" to avoid customs. This is illegal, can result in seizure, and may permanently damage your seller reputation. Japanese customs officers are thorough and experienced.

Packaging Tips for International Shipments

  • Use double-walled cardboard boxes for fragile items — Japan Post and carriers subject international parcels to more handling points
  • Wrap items in at least 2 layers of bubble wrap, securing with tape so they cannot shift during transit
  • Fill all empty space with packing peanuts, crumpled paper, or air pillows — no movement inside the box
  • Waterproof your contents with a plastic bag inside the outer box — international packages often encounter humidity and rain
  • Place the customs declaration form on a flat side of the parcel, not on flap seams — damaged labels cause delays
  • For fragile items, add "FRAGILE" and "THIS SIDE UP" labels in both English and Japanese (割れ物注意 / こわれもの)
  • Tracking and Delivery Expectations

  • Japan Post delivers door-to-door, including redelivery if no one is home (留置き通知 / redelivery slip)
  • Japanese buyers expect tracking updates — always use a trackable service for orders over $30
  • Delivery typically happens Mon–Sat and sometimes Sunday for Japan Post and Yamato; most buyers are accustomed to very fast domestic delivery
  • Communicate proactively: send the tracking number immediately after shipping — this builds trust and reduces anxiety-driven messages
  • 💡 EMS (Express Mail Service) via your national postal service is often the sweet spot between cost and reliability for selling to Japan. It uses Japan Post's network on arrival, meaning excellent last-mile service and familiar tracking for buyers.
